January/Spring 2010 UPDATE: NEW: HEIRLOOM SACRED DELAWARE INDIAN TOBACCO SEEDS. Nicotiana. $3.25 oz. ALL OUT IN-STOCK PIXIES, GNOMES SALE UNTIL ALL SOLD: 40% OFF ALL PIXIE-ELF-WOODLAND GNOME ITEMS. Emailme @ end of page.
I have been growing it for 3 Idaho mountain seasons. It produces a LOT of seeds. It smokes okay (friends unanimously say, 'not bad') and satisfies nicotine hunger. It grows to about 25" high. I start it indoors about end of April, however, lots of nature's natural sowing from previous year spontaneous plants do also well. Several times a season I harvest the bigger leaves and at least attempt to pick off some of the seed pods (too many). Finally got a curing process to work. Tried handing in bunches from cabin rafters, in root cellar, in paper bag, in refrigerator, but last year I laid out each leaf on screens in layered shelf-like clothes hanger in the root cellar and, Behold, got the green leaf to go yellow/brown. Finally. Summer root cellar is about 60 degrees F, has some typical Idaho humidity, and is dark. So this year I am selling 1 oz. (1 Tablespoon) of seed for $3.25. Please if you can contribute $.25 for shipping and we will split the cost of an envelope. Last season (+-2-45' rows) harvested dry some 3 lbs of smokable tobacco. Nice. After it dries in paper bag I clean the dry leaf off of the thicker veins for better rolling. Blessings and Best to you. Email form is below or you can phone 208-926-7077.

This is Feather moss, Hylocomium Splendens. It is hardy but must have acidic soil and plenty of shade and water. I usually find it around the hemlock pine, alder & birch groups. |

| WHY MOSS?!. . . |
| We will begin with one little individual moss plant. Usually in the springtime there appears on the stem of the little moss plant a sac that is quite difficult to see even under the microscope because of all the foilage around that stem. The sac is called an antheridium-not too important to remember for the purposes of this story. Inside the sac is where male sperm cells develop. Yes, they are called sperms, spermatozoids or antherozoids. These sperms, just like human sperm, have a little tail on each one of them to help them move. Where are they going? Well, also on that same moss stem or on a female plant closeby, there is a little pocket or scale like structure that develops an egg in it. When the egg is ready for fertilization the neck of this pocket, called an archegonium, gets mucousy, the tip opens and it exudes (puts out) a sugar that is overwhelmingly attractive to the sperm. One more thing is necessary to enable the sperm to swim to the egg which is rain. Now that the little moss plant is pregnant (my terminology) it will next produce a spore capsule which shoots up most often at the end of another stem called a seta. Once again under the right conditions of wind or water the spore capsule will release all the little spores and once again we are blessed with more little moss plants. It is my hope, and God so willing, that there is never an end to this story. |

Moss Tales This webpage was done (šAm I really publically admitting this?) by me-Barnes's Cattail Farm and special thanks to many www. free tutorials! I hope it was friendly to your browser. Thank you for visiting my website. Put some lovely moss and a pixie in your garden. Come back. Tell your friends. Comments, questions: Please use the above mail-form or call: Phone (Pacific Time Idaho) (208) 926-7077 Some of the inspiration behind this has to do with another very short story: When I was about 5 yrs. old a neighbor, Mary, about 10 yrs. old, told me that a little man lived inside this "door" which was a smooth, without bark, wood spot between two tree roots at the base of a tree trunk. I remember clearly how so very much I wished to see this little man and I went back to this tree trunk several times with a kitchen table knife trying to pry that door open. Now I contemplate on how to believe the 'Word of God' with just such simplicity. |
